Isle of Man Walks

Discovering heritage through new technology

Isle of Man Walks is an interactive walking app that enables you to access a wide range of media resources as you travel through the landscape. Engineered by our Story of the Land HAT, the project is is the first in the world to use iBeacon for an outdoor heritage walk and has been a great success in its first few months of operation.

Working with local company Fuzzelogic who built the app for RHT, volunteers from the Story of the Land HAT spent months researching historical documents, stories and legends, Manx language and local wildlife to build an extraordinary library of films, audio and photographs for the local community and visitors to the island to share. Staffan Overgaard, who coordinates the team, came up with the app idea on a visit to the Hague where he saw similar technology.

Once you have downloaded the free app to your phone and start your walk, you pass iBeacons along the route which transmit signals that the app picks up – even if you are offline!

There are currently three interactive walks in Rushen available on the app in Port St Mary, Port Erin and along the coastal route from Port St Mary to the Sound, plus a special range of walks with our partners The Pilgrimage Trail. In 2017, the Story of the Land HAT plan to extend the walk from the Sound to Bradda Head.
